Designing for all abilities—and certified compliance.
What is web accessibility?
Did you know if your website is not WCAG 2.2 AA compliant, that 1 in 4 people cannot properly view or access it?
Accessible Web Design at Poppy Eco Hub
At Poppy Eco Hub, we are proud to be the first and only BCorp certified company dedicated to creating low carbon and accessible websites. We believe everyone should have equal access to the web, which is why we combine sustainable practices with a strong focus on accessibility, making sure all our websites are inclusive and user friendly for everyone.
We design and develop websites to meet WCAG 2.2 AA standards, ensuring that accessibility is built in from the ground up. These standards help make the web a place where everyone, regardless of ability, can interact, learn and enjoy content.
About
What is Web Accessibility?
Web accessibility is all about designing websites and digital content so that everyone, including people with disabilities, can use them easily. This means making sure people can perceive, understand, navigate and interact with the web.
Web accessibility supports people with auditory impairments, cognitive challenges, neurological conditions, physical disabilities, speech difficulties and visual impairments. But it's not just about people with disabilities. It also benefits mobile users, older adults, people with temporary disabilities like a broken arm, and anyone using the web in tricky conditions. Even users with slower internet connections benefit from well-designed accessible sites.
Why Accessibility Matters
One in four people in the UK live with a disability, according to the DWP Family Resources Survey 2023 to 2024. That's 16.8 million people.
UK businesses lose an estimated £2 billion every month by failing to reach them. The collective spending power of disabled households is estimated at £274 billion a year. An inaccessible website isn't just excluding people, it's turning away customers. Every. Single. Day.
The Equality Act 2010 requires all businesses to make reasonable adjustments for disabled people. The Public Sector Bodies Accessibility Regulations 2018 make WCAG 2.2 AA a legal requirement for public sector organisations, enforced by the Government Digital Service.
The European Accessibility Act, in force since June 2025, extends requirements to UK businesses trading with EU customers above the size thresholds. Making sure everyone can use the web isn't just the right thing to do. For many organisations, it's already the law.
We make accessibility a priority from the very start, not a box to tick before launch.
How We Design Accessible Websites
Starting with Colour and Layout
We choose high-contrast colours that ensure text is clear and easy to read, even for people with low vision or colour blindness. Simple, clear page layouts that guide visitors without confusion.
Meeting WCAG 2.2 AA Standards
We follow these guidelines on every project to make sure everything is up to scratch when it comes to accessibility.
Optimising Page Structure
We use headings, lists and clean HTML so that screen readers and other assistive technologies can interpret the content correctly.
Alt Text for Media
Every image, video and non-text element is described in detail, making sure screen readers can communicate it to users.
Keyboard Navigation
We ensure all functions are easy to use without a mouse, making the site accessible for people with mobility challenges.
Screen Reader Testing
We listen to the site the same way a screen reader would. If it's not easy to navigate and understand, it's not ready.
Real Life Testing
We simulate how different users interact with the site, checking for any barriers that might pop up before anything goes live.
